Concrete Photography can be regarded as an own genre within Concrete Art. As such it appears alongside other related modes of artistic expression like Concrete Painting, Concrete Music or Concrete Poetry. At the same time, it is a branch of photography. Concrete Photography is its very own contribution to the history of art and photography. Its history begins around 1900 but by no means has it stopped evolving.
It was only with his pioneering text on The Future of Pictorial Photography of 1916 and his at the time unusual photographs, the Vortographs of 1917, that the English photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn succeeded in making photography refer to itself, to its very own form and structure as he wrote back then. The photo was henceforth no longer merely a medium and a sign for something else, something external. It had become an object, an object of a purely perceptual nature.
